Driving open innovation in financial services

Today, the nature of every financial services organization is being redefined by technological transformation. As part of this transformation, organizations that embrace open source software development and common standards will be best positioned to capture the growth opportunities presented by open innovation. At The Fintech Open Source Foundation (FINOS), our mission is to provide a trusted, independent, and efficient forum for this cooperation to flourish.

Guiding Principles

The Fintech Open Source Foundation (FINOS) achieves its mission via:

  1. Transparency and IP Cleanliness: all work produced by projects and working groups hosted by the Foundation must be published under a liberal, commercially-friendly, open source or content license, and are validated for IP compliance prior to being accepted into the Foundation.
  2. Neutrality and Meritocracy: all projects and working groups are fostered under an open, meritocratic governance model.
  3. Collaborative Structure: all collaborative efforts are grouped into use-case-focused Programs that allow like-minded community members to discover their shared interest / expertise and collaborate on mutualized solutions, without losing the momentum that comes from working in small, independent, focused projects and working groups.
  4. Security and Compliance: all work products are categorized with a lifecycle state that summarizes the maturity of the given artifact.  Artifacts cannot achieve "Released" status until they've gone through a rigorous, independent technical & security validation step.
  5. Diversity and Inclusion: the Foundation provides a welcoming environment for all participants.  All participants in our community are expected to observe our Community Code of Conduct to help support that environment.

The practical outcome of these principles is that Financial Services developers can collaborate in any of the activities the Foundation hosts, secure in the knowledge that they can safely reap the benefits of open source practices and technology, in a FinServ-friendly environment.
