25 minInovestor Pascal

Pascal agreed in the previous meeting to present on two topics:

1) Look at how, with LEI, it would be possible to build a self-registration website using blockchain / open source style system. This is still in progress.

2) Proposal for the group to look at industry classification (per request to group to suggest new topics).

In this meeting, Pascal presented a document, which he shared with the group, on Industry Classification Open Source Project Proposal. Key points and discussion items include:

  • Innovestor was founded in 1999 and in 2004 acquired a company that collected fundamental data on Canadian Equities. This company had created their own taxonomy for classification, with 85 industries across 11 sectors. They've been mapping Canadian companies using this system, including collecting XBRL filings across the globe and creating conversion tables between SIC codes and NAICS codes to this classification system to look at peers and comparables. The company mapping is at company level. (Securities are rolled up to company and there is potential to collaboratively improve this.)
  • The system does have some auto-suggest capabilities so could potentially be used to map their own internal identifiers to other external identifiers.
  • Innovestor would consider open sourcing this system if it would be useful for the industry.
  • The focus is currently North America and is used by customers who have use Innovestor software.

The group will continue to look at other proposals and then discuss next steps on this proposal including any potential crossover with/relevance to Financial Objects and FDC3.
