In order to facilitate the creation of high quality, secure and compliant open standards and source code, the Foundation has adopted the lifecycle described below. The lifecycle states provide a high-level, "at a glance" measure of the maturity of the given activity's work products, and are intended to help potential consumers and collaborators quickly determine where the community's activity is currently focused.
All open source projects hosted by the Foundation go through some or all of the following lifecycle:

In this and the following diagram, the hollow lozenges represent the possible lifecycle transitions (instantaneous changes to the status of an activity, usually governed by a specific process), while the coloured rectangles represent the possible lifecycle states (the statuses in which an activity can reside for a period of time).
